STUDY ABROAD - Perth, Australia

Human Rights and Social Work
MAY 9 - MAY 25, 2004

The School of Social Work at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale proudly announces its 2004 Study Abroad program to be conducted in Perth, Australia.

A large, cosmopolitan city situated on the Indian Ocean, Perth offers a feast of sights for exploring the world's oldest continent. Within the Perth area, diverse attractions abound, with the famous Outback just a short excursion inland.

This course will examine the increasingly important connection of human rights to social work, from both an Australian and US perspective. The Center for Human Rights Education, a division of Curtin University in Perth, will serve as a resource center for the course. Field visits and seminars will focus on human rights issues, like health care and immigration.

Social work today is challenging and dynamic, with human rights playing a key role in developing policies and practices. The course would be ideal for any undergraduate or graduate student or professional interested in learning more about different approaches to social problems within a human rights context.

Participants may obtain three hours of course credit for the course. Cost of the course, including accommodation, will be approximately $1,600, plus airfare and tuition. Financial aid is usually available, and SIUC undergraduate students may qualify for a Study Abroad scholarship.

Dr. Elisabeth Reichert, Associate Professor at SIUC, will be conducting the course. Dr. Reichert has recently written a book, Social Work and Human Rights: A Foundation for Policy and Practice, which serves as the textbook for the course.

For further information, please contact Dr. Reichert at Ereich1234@cs.com, or at the SIUC School of Social, Carbondale Illinois 62901, telephone: (618) 453 2243.
