STUDY ABROAD - GERMANY
MAY 11 - MAY 24, 2003

The popular Study Abroad program led by Dr. Reichert of the School of Social Work at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 2003 took place in the former East Germany.

During the first week of this two-week course, participants in the program learned how a former communist country now incorporated into the West has fared. The location of this part of the course was Erfurt, a city next to the German cultural and political center of Weimar. Also close to Erfurt is Berlin, the new German capital, a sight to behold with its famous landmarks and shopping districts.

In Erfurt, participants became part of an international social work seminar with a sister university. Participants were linked with local students and stayed with those students. The focus here was on social services and the adjustment processes since the east-west unification. A trip to the former Nazi concentration camp of Buchenwald also occured.

Dr. Elisabeth Reichert, Associate Professor of Social Work, used her new book, Social Work and Human Rights, as part of the readings for the course. Dr. Reichert conducted two sessions on linking human rights with social work policy and practice.
